Emergency Housing
Fabrication-oriented
Following the recent earthquakes which occurred in Central Italy, Lorena Alessio from Politecnico di Torino (PoliTO) created an international group for the development and the realization of innovative architectural solutions in temporary construction. The initiative has the goal to provide comfortable spaces to people in difficult situations due to natural or human disasters. The research concerns a collaborative design and construction (students and inhabitants) of temporary structures for common spaces and/ or houses. H.E.LP. (Housing in Emergency for Life and People) is a group joined by PoliTO, Keio University of Tokyo, The University of Tokyo, and the University on Naples Federico IlL Laboratories of architectural design, technology, and engineering are involved HELP merges different Lab experiences with the intent to experiment with various constructive methods using both contemporary and traditional materials.
H.E.L.P. - PROGRAMS IN 2017
In 2017, H.E.LP will provide temporary structures in Accumoli and Pieve Bovigliana. Those spaces will be used for community gathering purposes and various activities. Temporary structures will have the peculiarity to experiment with new methods of construction and new structures. They also have the aim to provide temporary but beautiful and comfortable spaces.
THE WORKSHOP - TTT WORKSHOP FOR H.E.L.P.
National Civil Protection provided M.A.P (Moduli Abitativi Provvisori - Temporary Housing Modules), which are planned for temporary villages as reconstruction areas where the earthquakes occurred. M.A.P. plans provide a basic master plan for housing modules, but it is completely lacking any design concerning places for gathering, open, and enclosed public spaces. Thus, the workshop is looking for interventions in M.A.P to create new spaces for the inhabitants. It also aims to provide places where a sense of community could be re-started. Students are asked to design a pavilion committed to being a place for social life, a space for meeting and resting, and outdoor/indoor activities. Thus, the pavilión could host activities, and it could be placed in a newly designed public space. The temporary pavilion should not exceed 250 sq, as enclosed space, if provided.
